Social Program



The official social events for the XXVII General Assembly is in the Program Book, pages 21 and 22, which are reproduced below.

  1. INAUGURAL CEREMONY & WELCOME RECEPTION
    The IAU XXVII GA Inaugural Ceremony will be on Tuesday 4 August 2009 in the Convention Center main auditorium, room R2.1, 14:00 - 16:00 hr, immediately followed by the First Session of the General Assembly.
    A Welcome Reception will be offered in the Convention Center, in the exhibition area and gardens, from 17:30 hr to 19:00 hr.
     
  2. RECITAL
    The recital Danças Brasileiras/Brazilian Dances, performed by the Quarteto Carioca de Violões - Rio de Janeiro Guitar Quartet, will take place on Monday 10 August 2009, 19:15 - 20:00hr, in the Convention Center main auditorium, Kayapó Room (R2.1). The program will consist of Brazilian music distinguished by use of diverse rhythmic and melodic elements taken from regional dance forms.
     
  3. CLOSING BANQUET
    The closing banquet "Noites Cariocas - Carioca`s Nights" will take place at the Morro da Urca (Sugar Loaf mountain), on Wednesday 12 August, starting at 20:00 hr. The beautiful view of Rio de Janeiro at night will serve as scenario to a banquet with typical Brazilian food and music. Pre-registration for this event is required. Transportation to-&-from the hotels is at the participants discretion, and can be made either by metro plus bus (see below) or by taxi. Location:

  4. INTERNATIONAL YEAR OF ASTRONOMY 2009
    MOVIE THEATER
    The following movies related to IYA2009 will be played during the GA in the main auditorium, Kayapó Room (R2.1), of the Convention Center:

OTHER SOCIAL EVENTS

Other social events restricted to IAU XXVII General Assembly registered participants and guests are:
  • Tour to Rio de Janeiro Observatoires - Guided tour to the three astronomical observatoires in Rio de Janeiro: the Observatório do Valongo, the Observatório Nacional and the Museu de Astronomia e Ciências Afins. Buses will depart from the Convention Center on August 5, 6, 7, 12, 13 and 14 at different times, with each tour restricted to 15 participants. Interested participants should sign in at the registration desk, where more information can be obtained.
     
  • Tour to the Morro da Conceição - Guided tour to the Morro da Conceiição, a well preserved and historical part of the city of Rio de Janeiro near the docks (Downtown), on August 8. Tickets at R$ 15.00 per person, restricted to a maximum of 90. For more information, please contact the registration desk.
     
  • Soccer game at the Maracana Stadium - Tickets and transportation to the Maracana Stadium to see a soccer game of the Brazilian Championship, between Flamengo and Corintians, on Sunday August 9 from 14:00 hr to 19:00 hr. Tickets (300) have been kindly made available to the GA participants and guests by the Rio de Janeiro Prefeitura and will be distributed in a first-to-come basis. Included is free transportation from selected hotels to and from the Maracana Stadium. Interested participants need to sign in at the registration desk.
     
  • Special planetarium projections - Special projection of "Two pieces of glass", produced by IPS International Planetarium Society and " ALMA: In search of our cosmic origins", produced by the APLF Association des Planetariums de Langue Française, have been scheduled at the Rio de Janeiro Planetarium (Gavea), on August 11 at 18:00 hr. These planetarium sessions, limited to an audience of 260, have been reserved for GA registered participants and guests. Interested participants should sign in at the registration desk. If there is much interest, a second performance can be scheduled to start at 19:30 hr.
