Do Low-Luminosity Stars Matter?

On a ride through the darker side of the Universe, we will encounter a zoo of objects that inhabit it like ultra-cool red dwarfs and sub-dwarfs, extending all the way down to Brown Dwarfs and beyond. In this visit to the dim universe we will also find one of the most bizarre-type of objects, the so called ultra-cool degenerates, which are the massive solid remains of the oldest stars that once populated the Galaxy. What are the latest news regarding these dim stellar objects, their masses, ages, history and luminosity functions? How is this knowledge affecting our view of the universe? Do they matter?
